This emblem was painted on the fuselages and wings of U.S. Army and Navy aircraft from 1919 until Americas entry into WWII in 1942. Featuring a large white star with a red dot on a disc of insignia blue, this roundel was changed to one without the red dot as the U.S. became embroiled in Second World War. The fear was that the red dot bore too much resemblance to the red Japanese Hinomaru roundel-the U.S. military was keen to avoid potential friendly fire casualties that could result from mistaken identity.
