The distinction of being the second oldest fighter squadron in the United States Navy belongs to VF-31, known today as the "Tomcatters." Carrying their famous "Felix the Cat" logo that has become ubiquitous in American military aviation culture, VF-31 distinguished themselves during WWII by participating in some of the most intense combat actions of the war. Flying their Grumman F6F Hellcats from the decks of the USS Cabot and USS Belleau Wood, the pilots of VF-31 brought woe to their Japanese adversaries in the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot, the Battle of Midway, Truk, and in many other engagements throughout the Pacific.
This AAC designed t-shirt commemorates the legacy of the VF-31 pilots of WW2 and honors the aggressive professionalism that characterizes the squadrons pilots who fly the F/A-18 Hornet today. On the front of the shirt, Felix the Cat runs with his explosive cargo against a field of orange over the words "strike fighter squadron 31." Those words are repeated on the back of the t-shirt, along with the VF-31 emblem superimposed over a silhouette of the famous Hellcat and the AAC logo. Two other Hellcats are close beside, watching each others "six" like good fighter pilots always do.
