The humble Gooney Bird was the unsung hero of the Second World War. Officially called the C-47 Skytrain by the U.S. Army Air Corps, the Gooney Bird was a militarized version of the famous civilian Douglas DC-3. Soldiers have a way of naming things what they want, and somehow "Gooney Bird" stuck-the C-47 reminded them of an ungainly looking Albatross. The depreciating name belied the value of the Gooney; it served in every theater of the war, delivering supplies, dropping paratroopers, towing gliders, and much more. It was this airplane that blazed a trail across unknown expanses of ocean, laying the foundation for the air transportation system that was born out of the chaos of WWII.
No collection of aviation inspired apparel would be complete without the humble Gooney Bird. On the front of this original AAC design, the C-47 waits patiently on the ramp under a cloud obscured harvest moon. The AAC logo and the words "Gooney Bird" figure prominently, and you can tell that this airplane is ready for its next dangerous mission.
