A self-assured tomcat, gunbelt casually draped around his hips, leans his elbow against an F-14 Tomcat. Both comical and sinister, the image serves as the emblem of the U.S. Navy Fighter Squadron VF-124. Nicknamed the Gunfighters, the squadron disbanded in 1994.
VF-124 epitomized the glory days of the Tomcat. But before the F-14s catapulted off a modern-day pitching carrier deck, the Gunfighters flew F4U-4B Corsairs and F9F-5 Panthers in the Korean War.
