The clouds parted, giving way for death from the 61st Fighter Squadron above. These aces of aviation flew the P-47 Thunderbolt. At one time, breaking the sound barrier when flown by test pilots. An astounding nineteen aces were counted among the pilot roll call, mustered between 1943 and 1945. Throughout this period, it was the highest number of aces of any flight fighter squadron in Europe. Did you know, that sometimes, the aerial fighting got so intense, fatigued fighter pilots touched down at the wrong airfield, which might not have been ours!

The planes of the 61st were known as the Juggernaut, or “Jugs” for short. They were the heavyweights of the skies. Sometimes weighing up to 12,000 pounds of American aggression before take-off. This immense size and weight surprisingly made the Thunderbolt one of the most successful fighters of its time. Especially in a dive. When an enemy aircraft attempted to escape destruction by diving, it was a sure thing the Jug would follow, use its own great weight as a gravitational advantage, and fire full-force with eight .50-caliber machine guns.

A jowly bulldog is the centerpiece of the 61st Fighter Squadron unit patch. Sporting clear combat flight goggles above an aviation headpiece worn about his forehead, a menacing, grit-filled determination in his right eye, and a squinting left eye denouncing dastardly doers, this mascot projected the epitome of aerial canine combatives. He’s biting down especially hard upon a zapping lightning bolt with his immense jaws, displaying a most dogged determination to engage in battle.
