Braka-BOOM! For the aftermath was total devastation! From the brave bowels of B-26 Marauders, the angry aviators of the 599th Bombardment Squadron wreaked hellacious havoc upon the bad guys yet again. This unit even earned a Distinguished Unit Citation at the Battle of the Bulge. Imagine the satisfaction of successive war actions. You’re buzzing through the flack, while homing in to attack. Rocked by the enemy’s wickedly ack-ack flack. With ice cool nerves of stainless steel, you throttle forward, on the calmest, straightest, unwavering keel.
The Battle of the Bulge, as personally witnessed by the 599th characterized true United States fighting grit. The pilots had to endure freezing conditions, much like the troops on the ground. Aviators consistently finessed their aircraft to operate in less than ideal flying environments. Inhumanly cold air could form ice on the wings, thus hampering the mission even more so. But this is where the fighting grit burned through the hardships, and ultimately, the feeling of searing, hot victory was the reward.
The patch belonging to the 599th Bombardment Squadron displays a lone, but strong, animalistic soldier with a most resolute military bearing, who’s quite capable of hefting a big bomb upon his brawny right shoulder, while at the same time one-handing a heavy machine gun with his left hand, unassisted. He is garmented in athletic wear of the times back then, ready at a moment’s notice to throw down and tangle with our feeble foes.
