Flying at night isn't easy, and being an aviator in the 548th Night Fighter Squadron took an exceptional kind of fighter pilot. In World War II, the squadron flew the cutting-edge Northrop P-61 Black Widow, allowing the 548th to become barons of the blackness and achieve total mastery of the night mist.
The squadron's heraldry comes in the form of a black cat with a mean countenance. The eyes are glaring ahead, with a furrowed brow. He holds a flashlight in one paw and a smoking gun in the other. The emblem is backed by a bordering bluish outer circle, with an inner dark blue roundel, and a central disc of a yellow-orange hue.
