The 4th Tow Target Squadron served as a training squadron for aerial marksmanship drills, air-to-air gunnery refinement skills, and ground-based anti-aircraft artillery practice.
Considering the conditions felt by the nervous pilot towing the target, it could certainly be said that the bravery of these tow target squadron pilots was off the charts.
Imagine having to endure errant shots, amateur aiming attempts, and beginners blindly banging on a trigger with the hopes of hitting a target seemingly the size of a puny postage stamp!
Against a clear blue sky, a tattered tow plane looks horrifically shot and shredded, full of holes left by shrapnel. The frightened pilot, mouth slack-jawed in awestruck amazement, looks back over his right shoulder to see the tow target sock, also full of holes.
The caricatured pilot is too terribly terrified. His hair is standing on end, thereby pushing off his flight helmet and goggles. Anti-aircraft fire is zooming up, zipping all around, surrounding him like angry buzzing bees swarming, armed with the deadliest of stingers. The exploding puffs of clouds or smoke can be seen in such close proximity that the poor pilot is just at a loss for words.
