Flying high above the cloud cover, the 44th Fighter Squadron manned our friendly horizons, and stood at the ready to fend off invaders of the enemy kind. Though our enemies thought themselves safe, our fighters, using their finely-honed aerial knife fighting skills to outmaneuver, outrun, and out gun adversaries, thrusted wretched, wicked blows, delivering the coup de grâce with unflinching fortitude. You can just smell the spent gun powder winding through the cockpit, filling your oxygen mask with fired .50-caliber, highly-explosive flavors from the tastiest freedom buffet.
When the 44th comes about, downed enemy fighters were sure to follow. These close-in, knife fighting airmen established air superiority wherever they flew. They’ve been known to fly in such tight proximity to the adversary, that facial expressions could be discerned as if they were in normal conversation. You could feel the professional tension, the establishing of dominance. It was palpable, like being in the confines of a boxing ring where only the winner was permitted to exit the ropes thereafter.
For the 44th Fighter Squadron, the patch depicts one seriously mean-looking devil dog demon from the nether regions of hated hell, flanked on both sides, by bloody red and black draconian wings, poised for flights filled with fights. Note the two large talons of terror atop the powerful vampire wings, ready to shred all enemy comers to absolute ribbons. See the glowing, fearsome eyes and fire-up jaws of war? It’s as if no matter where the enemy tries to flee, the 44th will find them, and devour hungrily with glee.
