In the Southwest Pacific Theater of operations, while flying the Douglas A-20 Havocs, the 417th Bombardment Squadron was a low-level bombing squadron that interestingly often skipped its ordnance across the water like kids throwing flat rocks across a pond.
And there was nearly no need for a bombardier, especially when flying near ground level. The 417th were adept at discharging bombs with martial arts precision, because not even bothering to have a proper bombardier aboard during duels was like shooting a pistol from the hip!
The stork armed from head to foot! Literally armed to the teeth, on its flight path to deliver big double booms and more upon enemy landing fields, troop encampments, supply lines, and other crucial assets deemed targets by our commanders on the front lines. The sharply dressed stork, wearing a dapper blue three-buttoned vest, and sporting a smart, squared-away service cap, looks calm, cool, and professional, perhaps almost bored even, because it’s so good at what it does – delivering a world of hurt to the opponents below.
