The 416th Night Fighter Squadron was born into battle on February 1943. One of the first night fighting units to take advantage of concealment afforded by lack of light, the squad executed defensive night patrols to fortify the North African campaign over Allied territory. To let our forces rest and sleep in peace for the next day of fighting, the 416th also protected harbors and escorted shipping convoys. Later, these cloaked combatants evolved to more aggressive adventures, masterfully orchestrating night interdiction raids, which flustered the enemy's wartime efforts to attack, supply, and communicate. And as icing on the cake, the 416th performed intruder sweeps deep into enemy-held territory, which included giving enemy troops nearly no time to sleep.
Night fighters were indeed a special breed of wind warriors. The 416th courageously took on assignments out of the sunlight, to take full advantage of the cover of darkness. Without exposure to daylight, our aerial shock troops could roll in deep, seemingly out of nowhere, and pound enemy concentrations in total blackness. Mighty explosions would wreck the adversaries into complete chaos on the ground, knocking enemy personnel senseless.
As depicted in the squadron patch of the 416th, the cloaked and hooded Disciple of Death beckons directly to the right, the correct way forth, to show where the owl with the scowl, a formidable night hunter in his own right, can aim his deadly tommy gun and fire for fullest effect. The Death Dealer uses his bony finger to pierce the darkness, allowing no advantage to the enemy under cover of nighttime hours. So no troop movements, no supply lines, and nearly no communications can take place against our allies. The patch itself is ringed with a crimson red border, which includes a crescent moon and three stars scattered about the night time skies in the black background.
