In the Pacific Theater, the 382d Bombardment Squadron served aboard B-24 Liberators as an operational training unit (OTU). Then later tasked as a replacement training unit (RTU). Their specialty was flying on night bombing runs, in the evening air when it was much more difficult to track our forces compared to flying during the daytime.
Night flying was hazardous in and of itself, so it was a rare breed of men who could pull it off with professional calmness that would rattle other pilots.
Bat wings show how the 382d specialized in the skill of aerial bombardments occurring at night. The skeleton denotes death and destruction from above, but seemingly unable to be seen due to the cover of the black night.
The skeleton was a mark of the proverbial grim reaper, a figure of guaranteed death upon those who would oppose us. Said skeleton, holding and cradling a large aerial bomb in its arms, showcased and symbolized the weapon of choice.
Here, the weapon of choice is pointed at the ground, ready to be dropped at the precisely calculated moment our guys knew would bring total annihilation to the enemy far below.
