The 311th Bombardment Squadron (Diving), had the exceptional ability to throw themselves directly at the enemy from high above. These pilots practically went nose to nose with the combatants on the ground, often being close enough to release their deadly ordnance in such close proximity that the expressions on the faces of the enemies could practically be seen!
This particular duck species (family: Anatidae) is actually one of the best divers in the animal kingdom. Thus, the 311th depicted the duck because the squadron is one of the best dive bombers in the entire US air forces.
With a yellow aerial bomb tucked under each arm, the duck, standing on a cloud against a plain white background, displays unstoppable dive-bombing air superiority. There's a most confident smile or smirk on the face of the mascot, because the squadron members know they can do the job with ease.
They can deal a diving death upon the enemy from high in the air, swooping in for the kill while the opponents can only watch and cower in fear.
