If you want to learn about a squadron from the WWII era that did it all, look no further than the 11th Troop Carrier Squadron. Their C-47 Skytrains (the military version of the ubiquitous civilian DC-3) were seen all over the European and North African theaters, carrying their comical "crated working horse" emblem and a big "7D" on the side of their aircraft. Flying with the U.S Army Air Corps 12th Air Force, the 11th Troop Carrier Squadron was vital to Operation Torch in Algeria. They went on to tow gliders during Operation Husky in Sicily and supported the allied campaign up the Italian Peninsula. The 11th earned a Presidential Unit Citation for their support of partisans battling the Nazis in the Balkans, where they landed in the dark of night on improvised airstrips to deliver vital supplies and extricate the wounded.
The courage of the Skytrain pilots that belonged to the 11th Troop Carrier Squadron deserves to be honored, and that is why the Aeroplane Apparel Company is proud to feature their logo on one of our t-shirts. The caricatured workhorse seems pleased with his crated body and wood-paneled wings as he streaks across a red field, while the paratroopers on his back look a bit less sure of their predicament. This logo embodied the "can do" spirit of the 11th Troop Carrier Squadron and no doubt provided cause for a chuckle or two.
